2020 Shiraz

Deep garnets and black core, this wine has lifted with some tar and cordite. Quite a lifted black pepper hint and backed by ripe cherries. A full bodied palate with great acid and tannin balance. The core is of spiced dark fruits with rich oak complexity.

Description

Ben Murray has been making our Barossa Shiraz now for many years, typically harvesting from the family-owned and operated vineyards of Marananga. Marananga, in the famed western sub-region of the Barossa Valley, is superb for growing Shiraz, with deep rich soils interspersed with limestone shelves. The 2020 vintage was noted by the harsh growing season at the end of a three-year drought. Yields were below average, but the growing conditions had a marked effect on the ripening of the grapes and resulted in the development of a powerful wine.

Product Awards

“Shiraz sourced from the Western Barossa and Marananga, this wine truly expresses its sub-regional heart. Dark, brooding fruits, including black plum and blackcurrant, enveloped in a blanket of appropriate, well-handled, quality, cedary oak. The wine is full-bodied with excellent concentration and toothsome tannin frame. There is an old-world, serious earthy-savouriness that adds gravitas, and a sense of place to the wine, a wine that could only come from the Barossa. 14.5% Perfect with char-grilled meats or mushroom ragout.” 93+/100 Peter Nixon, The Wine Libertine
“Beautifully styled and enticing, the bouquet shows dark plum, sweet cherry, olive and roasted nut aromas on the nose with a lovely touch of dark chocolate. It’s equally satisfying on the palate displaying plump mouthfeel backed by creamy texture and delightfully infused tannins, finishing persistent and delectable. At its best: now to 2038.” 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Hand harvested and crushed. Fruit fermented and vinified for over 25 days allowing extended skin contact, daily cap plunging and gentle pump overs to ensure total coverage of juice through the must. Gently basket pressed after vinification. 18 months in barrel for maturation, in new and old French and American oak barriques. The wine was bottled at optimum maturation and shows great potential for ageing.
