2019 Grenache, Barossa Valley, South Australia

A wine often dismissed at Australian wine shows for its strong oak profile but loved by wine drinkers, it is a true Barossan expression packed with flavors like rum n’ raisin, cherry cola, iced vovo, nana’s raspberry-coconut slice, rhubarb compote, and Dutch licorice. Impossibly juicy, luscious, and rich, it pairs well with smoky Southern BBQ ribs, star-anise and cinnamon-stick braised duck, or even a few mindless laps of Scalextrics. Folk n’ delicious at 14.5% alc. 95/100 Peter Nixon, The Wine Libertine.

Ben Murray has sourced the Grenache for many years from Marananga Vineyards that are up to and over 100 years old. Grenache is renowned in the Barossa region as a variety suited very well to the conditions.

Wine Orbit - Sam Kim

It's attractively fruited and complex on the nose showing dark berry, smoked game, thyme, olive and roasted nut aromas, leading to a succulent palate that is silky and polished. Beautifully framed by fine-grained tannins, offering fabulous drinking. At its best: now to 2029.

The vines produced ripe fruit from early March, which is harvested at ripeness by hand, the grapes were then destemmed and fermented using its own natural yeast in open fermenters, cap plunged twice daily. Following fermenting to dryness, the wine was left in contact with the must for an additional 10 days. Pressed and racked directly to a mix of new and old French oak barrels for maturation for 14 months. Racked from barrel and prepared for bottling the resulting wine is a great example of the popular style.

Dark red, black core, bright garnets in the glass.

  • Bouquet

Lifted notes of dark fruits, cedary oak, with brooding gun flint and cordite

  • Palate

A bright fruit driven core leads to balanced acid and tanning profiles. The palate is complex with layers of fruit intertwining with balanced oak tannins and deeper secondary flavours making this a special wine.
